On the Zijdeweg in Reeuwijk you will find Pernettyakwekerij M. Mathot, a family business that has specialised in the cultivation of pernettya since 1980. This elegant heath plant is best known for its colourful berries. What once began on a small plot of land has now grown into a modern nursery of more than 11 hectares. Each year, over 1.5 million plants leave the nursery, destined for customers both in the Netherlands and abroad.

From cutting to mature plant

At M. Mathot the entire cultivation process is managed in-house. In September the season starts with the taking of millions of cuttings, which are carefully rooted in special climate chambers. In spring, the young plants are potted in various sizes and receive full attention in modern greenhouses to grow compact and strong. After that, they move outdoors, where they benefit from fresh air and natural light. By late summer, the characteristic berries appear in red, pink or white. The true hallmark of the pernettya.

Bee friendly cultivation

A distinctive aspect of cultivation at M. Mathot is the deliberate choice to use natural pollination by bees. Instead of chemical or artificial methods, bees in the fields ensure pollination of the flowers. This makes cultivation not only more sustainable but also supports the wellbeing of bees, which play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Thanks to this approach, the nursery actively contributes to a healthier biodiversity.

With an annual production of around 3 million plants, M. Mathot can always supply customers with a broad and reliable assortment. Everything is handled in-house, from cultivation and selection to logistics and transport.
